Think like an architect

Keith Schreiner and Michael Papasevastos present

Think like an architect

Keith and Michael are asking for your help LIVE as they design the architecture of movie-kiosk rental company GenecaBox™ :)

Everyone in the audience will have a chance to play "assistant architect" as we go over high-level requirements, draw out the architecture on white boards and discuss the overall design.

The result will be what an architect has in their head before they would create an Interface Catalog for the Getting Predictable process.

Please bring:
* An interest in movies.
* Experience with using a DVD rental kiosk.
* An interest in seeing how an architect thinks.

Update:

The streaming video as captured from webex is a little too choppy to watch.

Instead we have a mp4 video (4.5 GB in size) that is available via thumb drive for those interested.
Please reach out to me at mike.reyes@geneca.com to get ahold of the video.

Joel Danowitz presents SignalR

On Thursday March 1st, Joel Danowitz will be presenting on SignalR.

In preparing for the Restaurant.com project some proof of concept work was done to build a web app that required real-time communication along with an auto-updating client interface.  SignalR is a .Net based library which provides real-time communication between the client and server as well as between clients.  It also supports all major browsers and will degrade for older browsers nicely.

Joel will showcase the app that was built to prove out these concepts, go into details of the code, and show how to spin up a project with SignalR.

The presentation will begin at Noon in the Employee Lounge and it's "BYOL" (Bring Your Own Lunch).  For those who wish to attend remotely please see the below for details.

How to get your web micro service onto the cloud, Thursday September 29

Mike Reyes will be giving a talk about creating a web micro service for no money down to start, and minimal costs as your site scales.

A web micro service is essentially an online tool used to fulfill a specific task.  It's considered micro in the sense that it's intended to be used for a single or simple purpose rather than being a suite of tools.  Think of Twitter or Gravatar.

If you like playing with technology or if you have an idea for something that you want out on the cloud, we'll go through how to create one for practically free.  We'll cover:

  • How to use freely available tools to write code and work with images
  • Managing your code in source control both publicly and privately
  • Getting your site up on the cloud easily
  • Storing data for your site on the cloud easily

The presentation will begin at Noon in the Employee Lounge and it's "BYOL" (Bring Your Own Lunch)

Groovy Talk, Thursday July 21

Chris Johnson will be giving a talk about Groovy.

"Java is a great technology – enterprise grade and time-tested.  Java powers some of the most critical systems in the world.

But, did you know that Java recently had its 15th birthday?   Groovy is a Java derivative that takes the best parts of Java and adds modern language features like dynamic typing and closures, which improve developer productivity.  It takes nearly zero learning curve for Java developers and integrates seamlessly with existing Java code.  Developers of any language will benefit from hearing about the modern language features that Groovy provides.

It’s time to get Groovy."
